The District and its three schools are making great progress academically, in terms of student learning and in developing engaging ways to connect with the broader community.

Teachers and all staff are working hard to meet the needs of all students.

Resources are being used effectively.

We need to maintain our investment in kids by supporting the proposed budget.

What’s at stake for Muddy Brook:

The addition of a full time librarian back to Muddy Brook is very important for our elementary students and our community.

We need to provide high quality educational experiences for our youngest students and manage our class sizes. The addition of a position in 4th grade allows us a responsible, child centered decision that continues this promise to our community.

Please attend the Town Meeting to support the schools and participate in the democratic process. Childcare will be available.

Great Barrington: Monday, May 7th, 6:00 PM, Monument Mountain Regional High School*
West Stockbridge: Monday, May 7th at 7:00pm
Stockbridge: May 21st, 6:30 PM, Town Offices, 50 Main Street

*Childcare will be available at MMRHS for the Great Barrington town meeting on Monday night

The parent mentor program is a new and upcoming program for the 2012-2013 school year which hopes to get parents involved in the school and community. The program will follow the already existing model for the peer mentor program which has been very successful over the past four years. We have planned to have two informational meetings before the end of this school year to hopefully get the word out to as many parents as possible.

The meeting dates are

May 9 at 6:00pm and

June 6 at 6:00pm

at Monument Valley Middle School

If interested in participating, the commitment would involve going through a six week training period (one night a week for 1-2 hours) which will follow the Courageous Parenting 101 curriculum. The training will be facilitated by community members and employees of the school district. After this six week training period, there will be several break out programs offered for you to participate in that will range from school involvement and the community at large.

The commitment can be as little or as much as you want depending on what works for you. As a district we are very excited to launch this new program and we hope that you will come to the meetings to learn more. We hope to see you soon. Thank you.

What do kids need to grow up to be happy, fulfilled, responsible adults? How can professionals and/or parents make sure children get what they need?

Based upon the latest research, Dr. Edward Hallowell, a renowned child and adult psychiatrist, has developed a simple, five-step process that adults can easily use to make sure children have the right kind of childhood, the kind of childhood that will lead to happiness later on, as well as moral behavior, an attitude of cooperation, and a zest for life. Learn how to help children get the best out of life, while avoiding the dangers that lurk along the way. The presentation will also take into account how having ADHD influences the route toward happiness and fulfillment and offer strategies to help create a good route.

Please join us for this fascinating and thought-provoking event, co-sponsored with Berkshire Hills Regional School District. In the meantime, stop by the library to borrow one of Dr Hallowell’s several interesting and best-selling books. (The Childhood Roots of Adult Happiness, Driven to Distraction, Delivered From Distraction, Crazy Busy: Strategies for Handling Your Fast-Paced Life)

Dr.Hallowell, a father of three, argues that we don’t need statistical studies or complicated expert opinions to raise children. What we do need is love, wonder, and the confidence to trust our instincts. His inspiring book outlines a five-step plan that all parents can use to give their children the gift of happiness that will last a lifetime. Connection, play, practice, mastery, and recognition—these five concepts hold the keys to raising children with healthy self-esteem, moral awareness, and spiritual values. Dr. Hallowell explores each step in depth and shows how they work together to foster trust, respect, and joy.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

EDWARD M. HALLOWELL, M.D. is the bestselling co-author of Driven to Distraction (with John J. Ratey, M.D.), and the author of “Love,” “When You Worry About the Child You Love,” and “Worry,” among other titles. He is an instructor at Harvard Medical School and Director of the Hallowell Center for Cognitive and Emotional Health in Sudbury, Massachusetts. You may read more about him at www.drhallowell.com.
